What happens if a loved one gets Coronavirus, and you have to take care of him/her while working a full-time job? Clients are wondering if they can take off work to care for their family members without putting their jobs in jeopardy. Can they be fired because of Covid?

The answer is it depends. If you work for a company with over 50 employees and you work over 1,200 hours per year, you will qualify under the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993 (FMLA). FMLA allows you to continue to get paid while on work leave. If you work for a company that has under 50 employees, you face the dilemma of Pennsylvania being an at-will employment state you can be fired at any time; this could lead you to be fired because of Covid.

On the other hand, if you work in the city of Pittsburgh, you get one hour of paid sick time for every 35 hours you work, under a new law passed in March. The good news is that most employees are covered by the stimulus package because the government will bail out the employer for a two-and-a-half-month period, at least.
