Lehigh, PA (August 27, 2025) – A driver was seriously injured early Monday when their van was involved in a crash with a dump truck on the Northeast Extension of the Pennsylvania Turnpike in Lehigh County, according to state police.
Troopers were dispatched just after 12:40 a.m. to the southbound lanes at mile marker 67.5 in Washington Township, said Pennsylvania State Police Cpl. Richard Levan, public information officer for Troop T. Police, said that the 2007 Peterbilt dump truck, driven by a 44-year-old Hellertown man working on a paving project at Exit A-68, was using the Exit 67 southbound gates as a turnaround when it struck the front passenger side of a 2022 Ram van.
The van driver had to be removed from the vehicle and was transported to a hospital with serious injuries. The dump truck driver was also taken to a hospital; their condition was not immediately available as of Tuesday morning. The Pennsylvania State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstructionist Specialist (CARS) Unit, the Forensic Services Unit, and the Lehigh County District Attorney’s Office all responded to the scene. Meanwhile, the crash remains under investigation by the Pennsylvania State Police in Pocono.
Our thoughts are with the injured victims and their family members at this time.
Truck Accidents in Pennsylvania
Truck accidents are among the most serious collisions on Pennsylvania’s roads, and crashes involving dump trucks can be especially dangerous. Due to their size, weight, and frequent use in construction and hauling, dump trucks pose unique risks to other motorists. When a dump truck collides with a smaller passenger vehicle, the impact often leads to severe injuries, extensive property damage, and long recovery times for those involved.
Across Pennsylvania, dump truck crashes occur on busy highways such as I-80, I-76, and the Pennsylvania Turnpike, as well as on local and rural roads where construction activity and limited visibility create additional hazards. Victims of these accidents often suffer traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord damage, broken bones, internal injuries, or crush injuries that may require hospitalization, surgeries, and long-term rehabilitation.
A variety of factors can contribute to dump truck accidents. Driver fatigue, distracted driving, mechanical failures, overloaded or improperly secured loads, and poor weather conditions all play a role in many crashes. In some cases, liability may extend beyond the driver to the trucking company or contractor, particularly if the vehicle was not properly maintained or if safety regulations were ignored. For victims, the aftermath of a dump truck accident is overwhelming. Medical bills, lost wages, and the physical and emotional toll can make it difficult to move forward.
Under Pennsylvania law, injured individuals may pursue a personal injury claim to recover compensation for medical expenses, lost income, pain and suffering, and ongoing care needs. Because these cases often involve multiple parties and insurance carriers, thorough investigation and strong legal representation are essential.
